Hayfield Primary School
Accessibility Ramp Project
The Problem
Hayfield Primary School is built in the Blue Mountains. This makes for a beautiful view when looking out the school, but it also makes it a challenge getting to the school. There is 31 stairs to climb in order to get to the school building. This is a problem if you are in a wheelchair.

Looking down at the steep stairs.
In 2020, a new student began his education at the primary school. At eight years old, Rajay is going to school for the first time. In order for him to make it to class, someone has to assist him up the 31 stairs. It is usually his father or a family member, but if no one is able to help him, then he isn't able to go to school for the day.
Rajay's father and their friend help him get to school.
The Solution
The solution is to build a wheelchair ramp so that Rajay, future students, and other community members will have easier time getting to school. I will be going back to Jamaica in August to work on the ramp. This project is still in development and I will update this page with more information as it becomes available. Right now, there are three parts to the project.
This is a map I made of the school with MS Paint and is not drawn to scale.
Part 1: Design the ramp and get a budget- I need to work with the school and the government of Jamaica (Ministry of Education) to find a qualified architect in Jamaica to design a wheelchair ramp for the steep school.
Part 2: Fundraise- Once we know how much the project costs, then we can start a fundraising campaign.
Part 3: Build the ramp- After we reach our fundraising goal, we can purchase the materials and start the construction. With the help of the community in Hayfield and the support from you, we can build this ramp in no time at all!
